Two Assam Rifles Jawan Killed And Six Injured In Manipur

IMPHAL: Two Assam Rifles Jawans were killed and six injured in a power IED blast at Chandel District in Manipur this morning. The attack occurred near 18 AR Camp which is located at DC Road, Chandel District Headquarter, around 6 early this morning. 

According to sources, a team of 18 Assam Rifles personnel were on their daily Physical Training(running) on the road. As the team were running between the first and the second gate of the camp, the bomb exploded with a loud sound sending shockwaves nearby.  The shockwaves of the blast thrown off some of the personnel over the road. One of Jawan died on the spot, while seven others got injured. 

The injured were taken out by a helicopter for treatment at Imphal. Out of the  seven injured, one injured jawan succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital. The powerful bomb exploded at the base of the hill near the army camp left behind a deep pit. 

Later, 18 AR  personnel conducted cordon and search operation in and around the area. Forensic Science Team and bomb squad team  also arrived from Imphal to investigate the incident. Top officer of the Assam Rifles and more police personnel arrived at the place to take stock of the situation.

The deceased personnel are identified as Rifleman Indra Singh and Rifleman Sohan Lal while the injured personnel are Rifleman S Sarkar, Rifleman N Shyamkumar, Rifleman Tirendra Nath Das, Rifleman Ram Govind Singh, Rifleman Nirmal Roy and Rifleman Lalnun-Puia. Till now no underground groups has claimed the blast.

Later villager residing in the area staged a sit-in-protest against the incident terming as inhuman act. The villagers also appealed whoever has planted should not plant a bomb in villages. This is the second time this year, underground groups have targeted security forces by triggering IED’s.
